Teachers, researchers and students at the University of Tampere
gathered together for a one-day symposium on Mediterranean research.
The symposium was open to all interested parties in the Tampere3
higher education institutions. During the day, fruitful ideas on how to
promote Mediterranean research in the whole Tampere region were
generated.
The keynote speech was given by Dr. Marcello Scalisi, Director of
UNIMED (Mediterranean Universities Union with 103 associated
universities). UTA is the only member in UNIMED outside the
Mediterranean region. There are many interesting projects going on in
UNIMED that could be of interest for the whole higher education
community in Tampere, in such fields as biotechnology, food and
water, journalism, etc.
UNIMED is also coordinating several projects on the refugee issues.
The symposium had the honor of hosting prominent diplomats: H.E.
Ms Nawel Settouti, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Algeria;
H.E Mohammed Ariad, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco,
and Mr Risto Veltheim, former Finnish Ambassador in the Middle
East and member of the Advisory Council of the Anna Lindh
Foundation.
During the day, interesting presentations of various research activities
at the University of Tampere were presented that provide a fertile
ground for promoting Mediterranean research activities.
